When reality is boring, add CGI.
I have zero interest in the Olympic Games, but I was intrigued by the following article regarding the opening ceremony fireworks display:
Beijing Olympic 2008 opening ceremony giant firework footprints 'faked'.

This kind of embellishment creates an ethical issue. In a television program which is supposedly coverage of an event half a world away, this kind of behavior right? I think it is not, unless the effect was acknowledged on air in the credits or something. I have not heard that it was.
When we watch a news-type program, we need confidence that we are seeing what actually took place. You mess with that, and the trustworthiness of all broadcast media is thrown into question.
But then, what else is new?
