Interactive Movies - Have we gone too far?
While listening to the Widescreen.org podcast recently, I found this story about Disney's upcoming Blu-Ray Sleeping Beauty DVD release.
Maybe I'm totally out of touch, but when I watch a movie, I want to actually WATCH THE MOVIE! (Feel free to add the yell if you read this on the air.) I don't want to have a chat window open, trying to read all the text from other lifeless people sitting alone like me behind their personal computer screens. I don't want to see another person pop up in the picture and try to talk to me! AACCK! Do they have any people really asking them for this? If I'm going to play Sleeping Beauty for a child, I want to sit with her and take her into the world and into the story, instead of always being thrown out of the movie by "interactive" interruptions.
Films are meant to be watched, not "interacted with." That's just the way I see it. Pretty soon, our kids won't be able to accept great films for what they are. I mean, are we going to have a Blu-Ray version of Searching for Bobby Fischer with an online chess game built in? I just know someone is going to actually try that.
How dumb!
